Center for Leadership and Volunteerism
Located in the Connell Student Center Lobby the Center for Leadership and Volunteerism is a clearinghouse for volunteer service at Mercer, matching community organizations and agencies with student volunteers and organizations through volunteer fairs and placements. The Center also places interested students, including work-study students, in tutoring positions in Bibb County through the America Reads/America Counts Programs. In addition, the Center offers paid student internships with local nonprofit agencies. The Center participates in Leadership MU, an annual leadership workshop for student leaders.
Student Volunteer Service
- Mercer students contributed over 12,600 hours of tutoring last year at Ingram-Pye Elementary School, Burke Elementary School, Alexander II Elementary School, and Joshua’s House in school-day and after-school programs
- In 2007-2008, Mercer students are served as paid interns at Communities In Schools, Volunteer Macon, Boys and Girls Clubs, Historic Macon Foundation, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and Habitat for Humanity
- Mercer co-sponsors Lights On After School each fall with Communities In Schools, where Mercer student organizations join with 150 public school students in after-school programs for fun, food, and games
- Volunteer fairs in the fall and spring bring thirty local nonprofit agencies serving children, individuals with disabilities, the elderly, the homeless, and others to recruit Mercer student volunteers as mentors and advocates
